OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

Greetings,

Welcome to the online home of Model Illinois Government, one of the preeminent intercollegiate government simulations in the United States.  2010 will mark our 32nd and, with your help, greatest simulation.  If you are new to our organization, please allow me a moment to outline MIG.

Each spring semester, students from around the state of Illinois participate in the Model Illinois Government simulation.  The 2010 simulation will take place at the Capitol Complex in Springfield and will run from Thursday February 25 to Sunday February 28.  Nearly 300 students from over 20 colleges and universities will converge on the Illinois State Capital to gain more experiences in a weekend than in a semester of classes.

The MIG simulation is structured for a legislative simulation as well as a moot court competition.  Students choose among various roles including:  Legislators, lobbyists, journalists, attorneys, justices, budget analysts, as well as many leadership positions within the parties and committees.  Within the legislature, students are assigned political parties and districts and placed in committees of their particular interests.  The legislators then simulate the legislative processes in the actual committee rooms and chambers of the Capitol building.

The Moot Court competition is held in the chambers that were once the home of the Illinois Supreme Court.  Teams of attorneys argue before a panel of student justices and legal professionals and are scored on the basis of presentation and knowledge of the case fact.

The Office of Management and Budget simulates how the Illinois state budget is compiled.  Students fill the role of Analysts and are grouped in divisions.  Under the direction of the Treasurer and the Director of the OMB, Analysts must balance the state budget by cutting the inflated requests of the individual departments, in addition to balancing the priorities of the Governor and the departments.

Awards are presented at the end of the simulation and students may also campaign for Executive Board positions (Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller, etc.) in order to take a more active role in the organization of the simulation.

On behalf of the entire 2009-2010 Model Illinois Government Executive Board, I would like to thank you again for your involvement in this year's simulation. It is our utmost duty to serve you, so please do not hesitate to contact myself or any other member of the board with your questions, comments, or concerns.  I look forward to seeing you in February.

Sincerely,

D. Craig McFarland
